Women talking inside the duson cafeThank you for your interest in the Bridge to the Doctorate program – an educational and socialization program aimed at cultivating the next generation of minority nurse scientists. This collaborative partnership between Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) Division of Nursing and Duke University School of Nursing provides opportunities to MSN nursing students at WSSU to seamlessly transition into PhD programs at Duke University.

Requirements for the Bridge program have been carefully selected and are outlined below. Admissions decisions consider a variety of factors and are made based on the quality of the prospect’s application. The application process is outlined below.

Admission Requirements

  • Bridge scholars are members of underrepresented groups in biomedical and biobehavioral research: (Racial and ethnic groups—American Indians or Alaska Natives, Blacks or African Americans, Hispanics or Latinos, Native Hawaiians or Other Pacific Islanders and/or disabled and disadvantaged individuals)
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited CCNE, CNEA or NLNAC/ACEN program.
  • GRE scores. Completion of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test within the last five years prior to application. If the GRE was taken after August 2011, a total score of 300 or more on the combined verbal and quantitative sections is required. If the GRE was taken prior to August 2011, a total score of 1000 or more on the combined verbal and quantitative sections is required.
  • Undergraduate Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.3 (based on a 4.0 scale) and a grade of B or higher in all nursing coursework.
  • Evidence of unrestricted licensure as a registered nurse in North Carolina or Compact state.
  • One year of professional nursing experience is preferred

A Two–Step Application Process

Step 1 – The WSSU Admission Process

Complete a WSSU application at the University Admissions Office or Apply online.

  • Apply as a "Graduate" student for the "Spring Term" of the upcoming year.
  • Pay $50.00 admissions application fee. You may pay the nonrefundable application fee of $50 directly online using a debit/credit card. Should you wish to pay the fee with a check or money order, please print and return the application agreement statement that appears after you submit the application, and return the printed agreement along with the nonrefundable fee of $50 to:

  • Submit one (1) set of official transcripts in sealed envelopes from each college and university previously attended. Transcripts should be submitted to the above address.
  • Submit three (3) letters of recommendations(pdf) from former professors, current employers, or persons well acquainted with the applicant's academic potential.
  • Submit GRE, MAT or GMAT scores.

Step 2 - The Division of Nursing Supplemental Documents

You will need to submit the following materials:

  • A complete MSN application form.
  • An official report of GRE Score.
  • A Professional Curriculum Vitae.
  • A copy of your North Carolina or State Compact Nursing License.
  • A letter requesting consideration for admission to the Bridge to the Doctorate.
  • An essay addressing your professional and educational goals, preparation for the Bridge program, and qualifications that would make you a good candidate for a career in biomedical or behavioral research.
  • A sample of your writing. Representative examples include a scholarly paper or report.
  • Three references from qualified individuals who are able comment on your ability to engage in research and scholarship; at least one of the references must be from an undergraduate nursing research faculty. (These may be the same as references used for the application to the MSN program, provided they speak to your research and scholarship ability.)
  • The Bridge team will obtain from the MSN program copies of the GRE score, transcripts, professional CV and nursing license.

Bridge to Doctorate Scholar with MentorReview, Interview and Notification

Notification Deadline: April 30

Once the Bridge Admission Team receives all required information from the University Graduate Admissions Office, it is forwarded to faculty for review. Select students will be contacted to schedule a personal interview. Following the interview, applicants will be notified of final admission decisions.
